In Mulieribus

luminous in song

In Mulieribus (een-moo-lee-EH-ree-boos) — the Latin phrase meaning “among women” — is a women’s vocal ensemble dedicated to strengthening community through the art of music. The ensemble specializes in works written before 1750 and champions new repertoire by women composers and for women’s voices.

Welcome to In Mulieribus

Presenting our 17th season

Under the Same Sky

Our 17th concert season explores our shared humanity, across cultures, age, ideologies, genders, even time and space. We increasingly hear about the widening gap and divisions separating us from one another, and it feels harder to find common ground with those who are different from ourselves. However, we all share needs and dreams under the same sky.

It is through our shared humanity that we can find hope and healing in the face of suffering and loss, identity and meaning to guide our way, love and compassion to conquer fear and isolation. We invite you to journey with IM as we reflect on these themes through music, itself a universal form of human expression with the power to transform and connect.

Meet Our Musicians

Founded in 2004, In Mulieribus (IM) has presented a highly acclaimed annual concert series in Portland since 2007 and appears frequently as guest artist throughout the region. Performances by IM have been broadcast on nationally syndicated radio shows such as Performance Today, Millennium of Music, and Played in Oregon.

    Director Emeritus, Oregon Repertory Singers
“As in medieval times, many in today’s troubled world turn to music for comfort and contemplation. Fortunately, the music that inspired our ancestors is alive and well in the hands of a group of capable musicians in Portland, Oregon. Under its artistic director, Anna Song, the women’s choral ensemble In Mulieribus has brought new life to rare early works, and woven them seamlessly together with those of contemporary composers, in well-crafted programs built around imaginative themes. Since its inception, In Mulieribus has developed into one of the most artistically compelling groups of its kind, and I for one heartily applaud the remarkable path they have taken.”

“It was one of the best experiences for a composer to work with In Mulieribus who have an uncompromisingly beautiful sound and an openness to perform and commission contemporary composers’ music. IM’s preparation of my work, “The Change of Color Is…”, demonstrated the ensemble’s dedication to the highest-level of music making which resulted in a fabulous premiere. Artist Director, Anna Song’s openness to communicate ideas led to a deeply-felt, as well as sophisticated performance of my piece. I have a deep conviction that the group will continue to speak to and challenge a growing audience in Portland and beyond.”

“My experience with In Mulieribus has been a total joy; they have premiered two of my works: the Magnificat for Women’s voices and Harp, and “Lux ex Nocte,” a work that they commissioned this past year. In both instances, I found the ladies totally professional, full of boundless good will and superlative musicianship. The Magnificat performance was so vibrant and outstanding that I begged their permission to post it on YouTube! The December 2011 premiere of “Lux ex Nocte” was equally stunning. In Mulieribus surely must be one of the “stars” of the musical scene in Portland, and they deserve to be better known in a wider sphere.”
