Artist Residency Program

High School Treble Choirs

Details & Application

IM’s High School Treble Choir Artist Residency Program will provide TWO high school treble choirs and their choir programs with 10-12 weeks of support and assistance from IM teaching artists, who will work collaboratively with choir teachers to enhance music learning in the choral classroom and foster student artistic growth. Two schools will be selected for the upcoming school year—one for Fall 2024 and one for Spring 2025, with preferences for smaller schools or beginning choir programs in the Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties. Over the course of the residency, IM teaching artists will work closely with the host school’s choral educator/s to design and offer multiple hands-on educational activities/experiences that will meet goals determined by the host school and its participants. The program will involve between 3-4 in-school visits tailored to learning objectives and goals identified by teachers. Examples of how an IM teaching artist might assist in the classroom include:

  • Leading warm ups and/or vocal technique exercises for the treble voice
  • Leading sectionals
  • Providing individual or small group voice lessons
  • Presenting master classes or demonstrations
  • Serving as a resource or professional collaborator for choral educators
  • In-school presentations such as clinics, master classes, and Q&A sessions
  • Other music knowledge and skill development activities as determined by the music teacher

Thanks to the generous support from Regional Arts and Culture Council, IM is able to offer this program free of charge to two school partners.

Deadlines:

  • September 1, 2024 for a Fall Residency
  • January 1 for a Spring Residency

Selection: Applicants will be notified within a week of the deadlines.

Many of the IM artists are music educators who combine deep experience in performance and educational environments, including IM artistic director Dr. Anna Song, and IM singer and Education Outreach Coordinator Susan Hale, who completed a long tenure directing the choral music program at Tigard High School. For many years, she also worked as a supervising instructor to Portland State University graduate students completing their student teaching requirements. Together with the host school’s music educator/s, we will create a customized program to support the partner site’s vocal ensemble(s) and choral program.
