Whispers of Desire

Together with pianist Susan McDaniel, the women of IM perform songs inspired by the Greek lyric poet Sappho to highlight her enduring power as muse and poet, and honor a woman whose voice—sensual, vulnerable, and fiercely human—continues to echo across millennia. Featured will be music by Johannes Brahms, Undine Smith, Ildebrando Pizzetti, and Christos Hatzis, as well as the world premiere of The Sleep Wind by Portland-based composer Charles Rose, winner of IM’s 2024 Call for Scores.

Additionally, IM is hosting an immersive Sappho pre-concert event to include art, poetry, adult beverages, and a talk given by visiting classics scholar Dr. Ellen Greene. Get to know Sappho before immersing yourself in the music she inspired! Event begins one hour prior to each concert

All Shall Be Well

This program invites listeners inward to hear the whisper of the divine within. IM performs works that reflect ancient wisdom and universal longings for truth and transcendence, including Steve Reich’s Know What Is Above You and Gustav Holst’s radiant Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, inspired by the ancient Sanskrit hymns. All Shall Be Well by Carol Jones draws on the luminous mysticism of Julian of Norwich and centers the program’s message: that even in times of chaos and uncertainty, there is a deeper peace beneath the surface.

In the Stillness

IM’s annual December concerts offer a contemplative escape from the hustle and bustle of the holidays into stillness and serenity on the darkest nights of the year. Embrace the hush of winter and celebrate the joyful anticipation of the season with traditional songs and ancient carols from around the world, as well as with music by Perotin, Murray Schafer, Matthew Larkin, and more. This 20-year-old Portland tradition is one not to be missed!
